Step 1: Sign Up for Alerts
- Visit calalerts.org
- At the top of the page, click “Sign Up”
- Select your county
- When an emergency occurs, you will now receive an alert on your mobile device
Step 2: Create a Plan
- Identify three people to check in with in the event of an emergency
- Create a list of the names, phone numbers, emails, and addresses of the three chosen people
- Make copies of this list and put one copy in your emergency go-kit
Step 3: Make an Emergency Go-Kit
Regional centers may be able to provide a pre-prepared emergency go-kit. However, if this is not accessible, here is a list of essential items to consider including:
- Shelter & Warmth: tent, sleeping bag, poncho, body warmer, blanket
- Tools & First Aid: first aid kit, rope, whistle, compass, gloves, goggles, pencil, paper, sewing kit, multi-tool utility knife
- Light & Communication: flashlight, radio, charger, glow stick, candle
- Food & Water: enough food and water for three days for one person
- Personal Hygiene: pocket tissues, protective masks, waste bags, hygiene kit (toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, hand sanitizer, deodorant, etc.)
- Personal Items: medications, small, portable assistance devices, small bills ($1, $5, and/or $10), ID card and/or driver’s license, and an extra set of clothes (pants, shirt, undergarments, and light jacket)
- Pet Items (If Applicable): food, medications (if necessary), an extra leash, a small bowl, and a toy
This is an example of what to include. The kit should be personalized to your needs and/or disabilities.
